Rev. James Godfrey
Mental Health Chaplain to EACH and the Presbytery of Yarra Yarra
While undertaking seven years of theological training, James Godfrey worked at Sacred Heart Mission in St Kilda, and then in Mental Health Outreach and psycho-social day programs within EACH. Drawing from these experiences, James’ approach to Chaplaincy operates within the social model of health, and he seeks to provide a holistic response to the spiritual needs of the individual person, in the uniqueness of their own particular journey. This approach is borne out of the recognition that ‘spirituality’ is a fundamental aspect of being human, and therefore cannot be exclusively contained within the structures of formal religion.
For those who walk-with persons experiencing illness and other life challenges– like carers and the staff of EACH – reflection on the fundamental questions of life also naturally arises. Through his experience working in the community health sector, James is particularly interested in supporting staff to explore the various ways of deepening and renewing their passion for the people they support.
James was ordained a minister in the Uniting Church of Australia in December 2012 and recommenced the full-time ministry partnership with EACH in January 2013. James is based at EACH’s Warrandyte Road office in Ringwood, but is available to meet for a chat anywhere around the Eastern Metropolitan Region of Melbourne. All conversations and meetings are held in strictest confidence. Please feel welcome to contact James on any issues related to well-being and living life fully, or to discuss the meaning and relevance of chaplaincy and spirituality for staff and clients involved in the community sector.
